About Our Village

Picture
Greatham village is not mentioned in the Domesday Book, but appears first in written sources as Gretham in 1196.
Greatham is the site of the Hospital of God, founded in 1273 by the then Bishop of Durham, Robert de Stichell. Greatham Hospital was originally a foundation for the care of elderly men over the age of 50. By the 16th Century the foundation was used more as a "house of entertainment for the gentry" and it was not well used for helping the intended beneficiaries. After 1610 there were reforms, and its original mission was resumed, still for elderly men. Ladies had to wait until 1761 when a second hospital, the Parkhurst Hospital was founded by the then Master of the Hospital of God, Dormer Parkhurst. The charities now combined continue to provide care for many elderly residents with almshouses and a modern registered care home in the village and beyond.
